Christian Movie Connect’s Cheryl Ariaz Wicker interviews Motive Entertainment president Paul Lauer and his thoughts about the growing popularity of faith-based films in Hollywood and how filmmakers are becoming open in “allowing faith and God into the fabric of the movie” in the past several years, as evident in award-winning films such as “The Mission” and “The Passion of Christ”.

Christian Movie Connect Episode 3 – Gideon Film Festival Day 1

Pitching Hope” is the story of a young, female college student forced to compete in an underground, high stakes game of horseshoes to win back her tuition money. “Pitching Hope” features film newcomer, Joni Adahl (Samantha Moreno), versatile actor and performer, Timothy Perez (Angelo Moreno), accomplished stage actress, Anita Cordell (Gloria Moreno), stunt double and fight choreographer, Raymond Wagner (King Lewy) and post-production editor, Barney Arlyn Storms (Matt Wagner). The film is written and directed by Tony Mendoza and was recently screened at The Gideon Media Arts Conference and Film Festival.

Christian Movie Connect Episode 8 – Devon Franklin

Film executive and author, DeVon Franklin, is the Vice President of Production for Sony Pictures Entertainment-Columbia Pictures division. He has worked on such films as “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “21,” “Pink Panther 2” and many others. DeVon was formerly a studio executive at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and got his start as an intern for Will Smith and James Lassiter. In addition to his entertainment industry pursuits, DeVon is also a preacher and motivational speaker. Devon recently appeared on the Emmy Award winning series, “Super Soul Sunday” with Oprah Winfrey on ‘Keeping The Faith in Hollywood’.

In this interview, Franklin talks with CMC host, Cheryl Ariaz Wicker, about how faith in God is the key component to success and how God has placed him in the entertainment industry for a specific purpose.

He also talks about being a pastor in Hollywood, his book, “Produced by Faith” and his movie, “Jumping the Broom”.

Christian Movie Connect Episode 51 – Rusty Whitener

Nashville-based, Rusty Whitener, is an expert in topics relevant to popular culture ranging from entertainment to spirituality. He studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, and has worked in professional theatre shows throughout the U.S. Over the past several years, Rusty has appeared in a variety of TV programs and films including “Law and Order,” “Lukewarm,” “Undaunted,” and the GMC TV movie of the week, “Decision.” As a writer, Rusty has gained critical acclaim for his novel, “A Season of Miracles,” which is now in postproduction with Elevating Entertainment Motion Pictures.

“A Season of Miracles” is a uniquely compelling drama about a group of twelve year olds and a championship little league baseball season, that is not so much about winning and losing as it is about living and dying.

Christian Movie Connect Episode 11 – Harold Hay

Award-winning writer, producer, and director, Harold Hay, has produced numerous television shows including, “180 Videos” and “The Zone”, which aired on over 200 stations in North America and 15 television networks worldwide. His programs have been honored by both the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) and Gospel Music Association (GMA) for Best Program of the Year. Harold is the author of the recent book, “The Red Pill, The Cure for Today’s Mass Media Culture,” which is considered a definitive work on the state of media and culture. He has also created a faith-based educational program for high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in media, film, or TV. Harold is the President of Flannelgraph Ministries and the founder of Media Missionary School, an online website and blog dedicated to the raising up, equipping, training and supporting future media missionaries to the mainstream entertainment industry.

In this interview, Hay talks with CMC host, Cheryl Ariaz Wicker, about how Christian values and ideals can be conveyed through media with relevance to the current generation.

CMC #110 – “Beyond the Farthest Star” in West Monroe

Christian Movie Connect had a unique connection to the recent screening of “Beyond the Farthest Star” in West Monroe, LA. CMC founder and host, Cheryl Ariaz Wicker, was the “Theater Captain” responsible for this special one night event at her local cinema. Writer/Director Andrew Librizzi & Executive Producer Benjamin Dane came in from Dallas to join her at the Tinseltown 17, making this an extra special premier and the perfect opportunity for Christian Movie Connect to be in a unique position to be a part of the action. Librizzi & Dane brought along the Kinkade painting inspired by the film, movie posters they autographed and spent time chatting with audience members.

Christian Movie Connect Episode 6 – Gideon Film Festival Day 4

Comedian, actor and writer, Michael Joiner, is rated one of the funniest Clean Stand-Up Comedians in the U.S. and has been performing nationwide for over 18 years. In 2006, Michael was one out of only four Comedians chosen worldwide to star in the top selling DVD,“The Clean Stand Up Comedy Tour.” He has also starred in the Hit Comedy TV show “Bananas,” as well as The Gospel Music Channel’s “Stand up for Clean Comedy.” As a solid character actor, Michael has appeared opposite Oscar-winner, Lou Gossett, Jr. in “Gracecard.” He is also a contributing writer for “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno. Recently, Michael hosted the awards banquet and closing ceremonies of The Gideon Media Arts Conference and Film Festival.

Prolific writer-producer, Brian Bird is the co-founder of Believe Pictures, an independent production company dedicated to entertaining worldwide audiences with imaginative, intelligent, life-and-faith affirming stories. Previously, Brian served as Co-Executive Producer and senior writer for four seasons on the series,Touched By An Angel.”  His TV writing-producing and feature film credits include “Evening Shade”, “Step by Step”, “The Family Man” and numerous others. His most recent writing and producing credits include Janette Oke’s “When Calls the Heart” (2012), Beverly Lewis’ “The Confession” (2012) and “The Shunning” (2011) for the Hallmark Channel. Recently, Brian was major contributor to The Gideon Media Arts Conference and Film Festival.

Christian Movie Connect Episode 2 – John Schneider at NRB (Part 2)

Actor, producer and director, John Schneider, is the founder of FaithWorks Productions, a media company with the mission of producing family-oriented recordings and videos. For most of the public, John is best known for his roles as Bo Duke on the comedy series, “The Dukes of Hazzard,” and Jonathan Kent on “Smallville”, a television adaptation of Superman. He’s also appeared on the shows “Nip/Tuck”, “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”, “Diagnosis Murder”, “Touched by an Angel”, “JAG” and many others. Alongside his acting career, John is an accomplished country music artist with nine studio albums, a greatest hits package and eighteen singles to his credit. He has also performed as Billy Flynn in the Broadway musical, “Chicago”.

In this interview, Schneider talks with CMC host, Cheryl Ariaz Wicker, about the personal blessings and professional challenges of being a part of the entertainment industry. He also talks about his most recent film, “Doonby.”

 

John plays Sam Doonby, a mysterious, yet talented drifter who gets off a bus one afternoon in a small Texas town to change and improve the lives of all those he comes in contact with. It is a story of greed and envy, played out against the backdrop of the classic country and blues music that is performed in Leroy’s Bar.
